Cetaphil National Healthy Skin Mission: Skin Care is Self Care
Cetaphil, the most prescribed skin care brand by dermatologists in the Philippines, in partnership with Watsons, launched the National Healthy Skin Mission last September 27-29, 2019. This campaign aimed to spread awareness and educate Filipinos how important proper skin care is and its impact on one's overall wellness. The three-day event tackled about different skin care topics wherein celebrity guests also joined in to share their personal experiences. I got to join the second day of the event and it was just perfect for moms like me because I learned more about how to keep our babies' skin healthy.

Dr. Kristy Alo-Manal, a dermatologist, talked about atopic dermatitis which is the most common type of eczema. This is a skin condition where patches of skin become inflamed, itchy, red, cracked, and rough. Atopic Dermatitis affects 10-20% of the children worldwide and only around 1-3% of the adults. The common trigger factors are milk, yogurt, cheese, nuts, shellfish, heat, perspiration, dry environment, and emotional stress.

Dr. Kristy emphasized that a proper skin care regimen is the cornerstone of treatment in Atopic Dermatitis. Because prevention is always better than cure. She also shared the ingredients that we need to avoid when it comes to looking for skin care products—alcohol, dyes, talc, parabens, and triclosan. And what we should look for are products that are hypoallergenic, fragrance-free, and non-comedogenic.

Having atopic dermatitis means having a damaged skin barrier, which makes the skin more sensitive to irritants, allergens, and bacteria. Celebrity mommies, Kaye Abad and Bea Soriano Dee, emphasized that moisturizing is the number one way to prevent this from happening to them and to their babies. Moisturizing is very important and should be taken seriously because it greatly helps in protecting our skin barrier, thus, preventing atopic dermatitis.

Dr. Kristy also shared a few practical tips when it comes to cleansing and moisturizing our own skin and our babies':
  • Limit bath time to around 5-10 minutes.
  • Use warm, not hot water.
  • Pat skin partially dry with a towel. Avoid rubbing.
  • Apply medicine when skin is almost dry then layer moisturizer within 30 minutes after taking a bath.
  • Apply moisturizer at least twice a day and apply along the direction of hair growth.
  • Avoid irritating clothing material like wool. Wash new clothes before using.
  • Keep fingernails short and smooth.
  • Avoid the sun from 10AM-4PM.

I learned a lot from the Cetpahil National Healthy Skin Mission and I hope you did too when you read this post. I am hoping that people will be more aware how important skin care is and be more open-minded that skin care is not kaartehan but an essential way when it comes to taking care of ourselves and our overall wellness. Because skin care is self care.
