There is no denying the fact that today, everything is happening through the Internet—gathering information, communicating with people, rendering a service, dating, online shopping, and a lot more. And as a mama who loves to shop, let's talk more about online shopping. Ever since the idea of shopping without going to the store physically came to my knowledge, I got hooked. I'm pretty sure you're guilty of it too, no? Shopping for things that you need and want in the comforts of your home sounds promising because who wants to be inconvenienced with traffic and long lines? But let me ask you one thing, how do you feel about this whole thing about online shopping? Does it really make your life easy or does it make things even more complicated and make you worry?

The online shopping trend is growing more and more and to be honest, I don't see it dying down because of all the technology advancements that we have now. And of course, people are becoming more and more enthusiastic with what the digital world has to offer. Shopping for products online does make life easier because you just have to simply type in and search for the thing that you want, add it to your cart, and checkout. Voila! You just have to wait until your order gets delivered right at your doorstep. Very convenient and hassle-free, right? But nothing in this world is perfect, online shopping has its own risks too. Risks of online shopping:

  • Scams
  • Identity Theft
  • Fake goods
  • Fake stores/sites
  • Malware

These are just a few of the risks that online shopping entails and these can affect you if you don't pay attention and take extra care with everything that you do in the Internet. But you can still prevent this from happening by learning how to become extra vigilant which is basically what the #makeITsafePH campaign, spearheaded by Globe Telecom, is all about.

As a purveyor of digital lifestyle, Globe Telecom, wants to educate you, as consumers, about the online threats that online shopping may pose and what you can do to avoid becoming a victim. Tips for a safe online shopping experience:

  • Shop at online stores/sites that have a strong reputation: If there's only one advice I can give you, it's this. Stick to the popular and trusted online stores. If you already know the store and have experience buying products without issues, then stick with that store. But if you really want to try shopping at a website you're not really familiar with yet, always take extra precaution and research. Read reviews and feedback from legit consumers who have tried shopping at that particular website. But do know that other sites are using real people for fake reviews these days too. With this, I have to say you trust your instinct. If you feel like their reviews are too good to be true, then forget it and go back to what I mentioned earlier.
  • Always use a secure connection: When shopping online or simply doing any financial transactions online, make sure that your computer's firewall is on and avoid using public Wi-Fi networks because hackers can intercept your connection which may compromise your personal information. Make sure to install security patches on your web browsers too.
  • Check the website: Ensure that the website you're accessing is security enabled. Check the address bar and see if there's a padlock symbol and the URL starts with https://. The HTTPS is an online safety protocol developed by Netscape that encrypts information to keep your data private and secured. This means that your personal information and financial details can't be intercepted by the hackers which means, it's safe.
  • Use safe payment options: I have to say that the safest payment option when shopping online is through a credit card. Why? Because unlike debit cards, credit cards have extra consumer protection against fraudulent charges. You can also use secure third party payment services such as PayPal. PayPal only acts like a middleman where you send the payment to them and then they send your payment to the seller. This means, the seller can't receive any sensitive financial information such as your credit card number or account number. Of course, do your part and double check your statements and accounts regularly to avoid fraudulent charges. If these options are not available for you, go for trusted sites that offer the Cash-on-Delivery option instead.
  • Think before you click: This tip applies not only to online shopping but to everything that you do on the Internet. Whatever you do, always be vigilant of anything that you see on the web. Shopping sites display ads on their pages so be wary of those ads especially those that show too-good-to-be-true offers. These kinds of ads are tailored to make you click and once you do, these may be malicious and may infect your system with malware which can compromise your sensitive information. Be vigilant of spammy emails and links too.

All coins have two sides and every thing has its own set of advantages and disadvantages. Shopping online may be the most convenient method of purchasing goods but as I've mentioned, it has its own risks too. With all the technology advancements and enhancements popping up these days, it is very important to stay secure with everything that you do online. So take time to understand and apply these basic tips I have shared to you so that the next time you buy goods online, you can call yourself a smart and vigilant shopper. Together, let's all #makeITsafePH!
