It is pretty obvious that Cebu, the Queen City of the South, has become travelers' and tourists' favorite destination. With its attractions with rich cultural history, pristine beaches, and food and adventure spots, Cebu continually offers lots of new sights to see and new experiences to try. It is undoubtedly a must-visit and should definitely be at the top of your bucket list.

A lot of travelers from different walks of life visit the city with the goal to experience what it feels like when in Cebu. Traveling in Cebu doesn't have to be extravagant, but of course it all depends on our own preferences. But if you're a budget traveler like me, here are my top five tips to enjoy Cebu while keeping your budget intact.

1. Be smart about your accommodation choices

Accommodation is definitely one of the things that can eat up your budget when traveling. When you’re here in Cebu, booking a night or two at one of those three-to- five-star hotels and beach resorts might come into your mind but if you really want to hold onto your fixed budget, skip the thought and go for budgets hostels and inns instead.

Take time to browse and search through the world wide web using online sites like Traveloka Philippines or TravelBook PH because you can find many affordable places to stay with decent facilities just enough to get you through the night. Finding cheap accommodation when traveling will definitely reduce your expenses and save you even more money which you can use to spend on activities and other more important necessities.

2. Travel with a partner/friend

When you go to Cebu (or when you travel anywhere, in general), it is best that you travel with your partner or a friend so you can have someone to share the experience with all throughout. Like what they say, some experiences are best when shared.

Another reason (I'm pretty sure you'll agree with me on this) is you get to have someone who can take your photos. It's definitely better than having weird-angled selfies or time-consuming tripod setup, right?

Lastly, which is probably the best reason to travel with someone is you get to share your expenses. You get to share the cost of your accommodation, food, tour activities, and transportation. You can definitely save an ample amount of money which you can use for the rainy day.

3. Use public transportation

Another tip to keep your travel budget intact is to avoid taxis and go for public transportation. Of course, there is no doubt that taking a cab is the easiest way to go from Point A to Point B. But I tell you, your travel journey in Cebu will never complete without every trying the city's different forms of public transportation such as the habal-habal (motorcycle taxi), tricycle, and jeepney.

4. Avoid expensive restaurants

I'm not being biased here but for me, Cebu is one of the best cities to go for a food adventure here in the Philippines. Multinational dining choices may be popping out like mushrooms in Cebu, but the real Cebuano food adventure lies beyond the expensive restaurants. Whenever you travel, one of the best tip to fully the experience the place you are visiting is to eat like a local. And I am telling you, that going on a Cebuano food journey doesn't have to hurt your pocket. So, here are some of Cebu's must-try affordable food spots that I suggest you should try:
  • Rico's Lechon - Your Cebu travel experience is not complete without trying Cebuano lechon (roasted pig)!
  • Burrow Lounge - Unlimited chicken wings!
  • Tuslob Buwa
  • Larsian Barbecue
  • Siomai sa Tisa
There are a lot more budget-friendly places to dine in Cebu and what I suggested is just the tip of the iceberg.

5. Visit tourist attractions that won't hurt your pocket

I'm sure that when you say Cebu, going on a beach getaway is the very first thing that comes into your mind. However, this may cost you a bit more considering that the beautiful beaches are located way up Northern Cebu or down Southern Cebu. Though there are beautiful beaches in the metro, most especially in Mactan, however most of them are three-star beach resorts which is expensive. So the best alternative when touring around Cebu is go for tourist attractions that are not so far away (to cut down on transportation expenses) and only require minimal amount to access. Places I suggest you visit are:

No matter where you go, one of the most important things to consider is to always bring with you a backpack with excellent quality that will be with you through all of your adventures. Whether you are looking for a business travel backpack, a hiking backpack, or a waterproof backpack, there are lots of options where you can buy one, and one example is BackpackHack.com. The greatest factor you should consider when looking for a backpack, is that your backpack should be able to withstand the test of time.
